Aimable Kigenza, also known as Aimz Kigenza, is a Rwandan visual artist and sculptor. He works primarily in acrylic and oil paints on canvas, often using mixed media to create textures and symbolic representations. He also produces sculptures from metal and iron, including repurposed materials from cars, bicycles, and motorcycles.
Early life and education
Kigenza is a self-taught artist. He graduated from the former National University of Rwanda with a degree in Economics and Management, specializing in Accounting Sciences. He left a career in accounting to pursue a professional career in visual arts.
Career
Kigenza’s work focuses on themes of life, history, nature, and wildlife. He is known for the abstract series Season of Delight(Harmonious), which uses colors and textures to evoke experiences of nature and the environment.
He is also recognized for the giant silverback gorilla sculpture titled Renaissance, which references Rwanda’s history following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Kigenza has exhibited his work in Rwanda and internationally, including the United States. He currently serves as managing director and resident artist at Niyo Arts Center in Kigali, a gallery visited by thousands of tourists annually.
